John J. Ricotta, Esq.

John J. Ricotta focuses his practice in the areas of criminal defense, including cases ranging from high profile public corruption and white collar crime to DUI offenses, civil litigation involving Section 1983 civil rights claims, medical malpractice, professional liability, and personal injuries arising from automobile and workplace accidents.   Mr. Ricotta has extensive trial and appellate litigation experience, and has appeared in federal district courts in Ohio and throughout the country.  Mr. Ricotta has represented defendants in the Southern District of Illinois, the Southern District of Florida, the Western District of Pennsylvania, and the Eastern Division of Michigan.  He has also appeared before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia

Notably, Mr. Ricotta was one of the first attorneys in the country to prevail in bringing civil claims on behalf of victims of sexual abuse against the Catholic Church.  He also successfully represented a former U.S. Congresswoman accused of federal felonies related to a U.S. Department of Justice investigation of the House Bank before federal courts in Washington D.C., and successfully brought a civil rights suit on behalf of prisoners who were sexually assaulted by an Elyria, Ohio patrolman.  Currently, Mr. Ricotta is handling the appeals three men on death row in Ohio, and acting as counsel for real estate developer Pinnacle Management Company, and the Fraternal Order of the Police

Mr. Ricotta began his career as an Assistant County Prosecutor in the criminal division at the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office.  Mr. Ricotta was in the Major Trial Division of the Prosecutor's Office until he left in 1989 to join the law firm of Ward, Marein & Gillette, a civil defense firm focusing on defending municipalities and law enforcement in civil rights cases.  In 1989, Mr. Ricotta also formed John J. Ricotta, Co., LPA, and in 1996, he opened his own law office.  In 1987, Mr. Ricotta obtained his license to practice law in the state of New York where he maintains an office with his brother, Kevin A. Ricotta, Esq., located at 1100 Main Place Tower, 350 Main Street, Buffalo, New York 14202.

Mr. Ricotta earned his Juris Doctor from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in 1980, and his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1977.
